HITSZ Students Contribute AI Solutions for Sustainability at UNU Macau Events

2025-11-18

MACAU, November 17 ---- Students from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen (HITSZ) recently attended the AI Literacy Camp and Conference organized by the United Nations University Institute in Macau (UNU Macau). Xian Haoyang and Li Xingshuo, selected by the campus to join these forums, engaged with global experts on AI’s role in sustainable development.

The AI Literacy Camp, themed “Frontiers of Generative AI: Smarter, More Precise, Greener,” featured workshops on cutting-edge applications. A key session demonstrated how edge computing enables real-time AI decisions while protecting data privacy. Applying these insights, Xian Haoyang developed an “Environmental Monitoring AI Agent,” integrating visual recognition and IoT systems to advance his technical skills.

As observers at the UNU AI Conference, themed “AI for People: Co-building an Equitable Digital Future,” the students joined over 500 global participants. Discussions addressed AI governance, digital inclusion, and using technology to support sustainable development. Notably, the conference featured solutions balancing social needs with environmental care, such as AI-driven agricultural innovations.

Reflecting on the experience, Li Xingshuo noted the value of hearing diverse international viewpoints, especially from representatives of developing countries regarding equitable technology access.

Drawing on his background in computer science and embedded systems, Xian Haoyang proposed two AI applications aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals: an urban monitoring network to improve city management and reduce emissions, and an agricultural alert system to support rural communities. Both solutions emphasize affordability and local deployment to ensure accessibility in diverse regions.

A campus representative stated, “We support students in applying technology to real-world challenges and sharing their perspectives globally.” The event reinforced the importance of responsible innovation and the university’s commitment to cultivating global talent.
